Chapter Two: How Pearls Are Born

Chapter Two — in which a tiny intruder becomes a treasure.

Every gemstone on Earth is made by rocks and time — except one. The pearl is the only gem made by a living animal.

It starts like this: a tiny speck — maybe a grain of sand or a little parasite — sneaks inside an oyster's shell. The oyster can't push it out, so it does something clever instead. It wraps the speck in layer after layer of a smooth, shimmery material called nacre (say it: NAY-ker), the same beautiful stuff that coats the inside of its shell.

Layer by layer, month after month, the annoying little speck becomes something precious. A good pearl can take 2 to 4 years to form. Nature is patient!

And here's the part we love: the oyster didn't choose the problem — but it turned the problem into the most beautiful thing it ever made. If that isn't a life lesson, what is? 🪷

Next time you see a pearl, remember: it began as a bad day that something small and quiet decided to turn into a masterpiece.
